Winding Your Warp to Scour and Dye/Paint
- You need
a. Your warp yarn
b. Contrasting colored acrylic yarn cut into 12 inch lengths. You will need 1 piece for each yard of your warp. You will place them at the center of your warping board.
c. A warping board
d. A container for yarn – a bucket on the floor or a peg stand - Warp with your yarn for ½ inch
- Using a strand of the acrylic yarn start to mark at the center of the warping board using the inserted diagram. Start the first loop and hang it off of the back.
- Wind another ½ inch of warp
- Twine the acrylic yard over this second ½ inch bundle of warp.
- Repeat until the warp is the desired width. Tie a bow loosely at each acrylic tie. Take the loops of each bow and tie a knot. You may scour your warp at this point. Be sure that you have also tied all regular knots on the warp such as choke ties and securing the cross.
- Leave the ties in place until the warp is spread on the table for painting.
- (Optional) Right before painting, untie the bows only and tie a small overhand knot at the two ends. The twining stays in place. Spread warp bundles evenly using acrylic as a guide to prevent tangles and to make sure that the yarn is completely covered with dye. You may tighten the ties before batching to keep the warp in place.
