Winding Your Warp to Scour and Dye/Paint

  1.  You need
    a.  Your warp yarn
    b.  Contrasting colored acrylic yarn cut into 12 inch lengths.  You will need 1 piece for each yard of your warp.  You will place them at the center of your warping board.
    c.  A warping board
    d.  A container for yarn – a bucket on the floor or a peg stand
  2. Warp with your yarn for ½ inch
  3.  Using a strand of the acrylic yarn start to mark at the center of the warping board using the inserted diagram.  Start the first loop and hang it off of the back.
  4. Wind another ½ inch of warp
  5. Twine the acrylic yard over this second ½ inch bundle of warp.
  6. Repeat until the warp is the desired width.  Tie a bow loosely at each acrylic tie.  Take the loops of each bow and tie a knot.  You may scour your warp at this point.  Be sure that you have also tied all regular knots on the warp such as choke ties and securing the cross.
  7. Leave the ties in place until the warp is spread on the table for painting.
  8. (Optional)  Right before painting, untie the bows only and tie a small overhand knot at the two ends.  The twining stays in place.  Spread warp bundles evenly using acrylic as a guide to prevent tangles and to make sure that the yarn is completely covered with dye.  You may tighten the ties before batching to keep the warp in place.
