Like traditional double weave, this weave structure is woven in two layers.  However, there are sections where the two layers are combined, or interlaced.  In the sections with separate layers, there are both warp and weft floats, allowing the threads to slide and bend (i.e., deflect), when the fabric is off the loom and wet-finished.  The deflections can produce waves and circles, leading to endless design possibilities!

In this Deflected Double Weave workshop, you will weave samples to explore the use of different fibers and setts, including selvedge and finishing techniques used in deflected double Weave.  Afterwards you will be able to use what you have learned to weave a scarf, if you choose, with the remainder of your warp.

On day 1, Weave deflected double weave samples on your pre-warped 8-shaft loom using various fibers and setts. Explore selvedge methods “where the shuttle meets the shed” for beautiful finishing. Discuss various finishing methods with and without agitation. Cut samples off loom and hand wash samples prior to Day 2

On Day 2, we will discuss and compare hand washed samples-movement/deflection v. differential shrinkage. Explore a simple treadle OR tie-up change to weave your own scarf with the remainder of your warp(or sample).

This class is perfect for the student with little or no prior weaving experience.  We will be weaving a set of small cotton mats that can be used as mug mats or saved as samples in a notebook for future reference.  You will learn to plan your project, decipher a threading draft, measure and wind a warp, dress the loom from back to front, and weave a set of from 4 to 6 mats - each with a different treadling pattern of your choosing.

For the student who completes the first project quickly and is able to spend some independent time weaving during the TFAC drop in hours on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons, there may be an opportunity to put on a second warp with a different threading for a wall hanging sampler or more mats.  This would be a great way to reinforce what you learned during the first half of the class.

Participants should bring: pencil and paper and their favorite shuttle if they have one (not required).  Please bring a lunch for the first meeting date.

Instructor is vaccinated.  All participants should be vaccinated and wear a mask. Thank you!

2 Layers, 4 or 8 Shafts, 6 Colors – Endless possibilities! This is perhaps the ultimate color sampler! You will begin by winding a warp and setting up your loom according to Jennifer’s system for working with multiple colors in a rotational sequence and bringing it to the workshop.
A basic two-layered structure will enable you to mix and match our colors, creating an amazing array of color mixtures. As you weave and your warp colors move past each other you will experience a visual feast of iridescence and moire patterns.
We will also experiment with single-layered structures such as warp rep and warp-faced twills and the effects that they create on this versatile warp. Those set up for two blocks on eight shafts will also be able explore an unlimited range of block combinations.
The workshop includes a comprehensive lecture on block doubleweave that will give you the tools to create your own block designs in doubleweave for as many shafts as you have. This sampler will provide a remarkable education in color theory and how optical mixtures work in weaving, as well as a great source of inspiration for future weaving projects.

Handouts include links to videos showing how to wind your warp and set up your loom.

Pre-requisites for Participants:
  • No previous experience with Double Weave is necessary.
  • This workshop is not appropriate for beginning weavers.
  • It is expected that students have independently warped and woven multiple structures on either a 4 or 8 Harness floor or table loom.
