Where: On Zoom! October - Finnish Style Cotton Rugs Wynne Mattila has been weaving her Finnish-Style Cotton Rugs for more than 30 years. Her specialty is color blending using the alternating three-shuttle technique. “The off-white warp is a blank canvas on which I paint with colored fabrics—the design of the rug is created solely by the arrangement of the weft strips. I love this visual process in which each shot of fabric plays a part in the overall design.” In her presentation, Wynne shares her passion for rugs and introduces you to her artistic and weaving processes. |

Where: on Zoom!
Due to the rise in COVID infections locally, the board has made the decision to make the August meeting a virtual meeting via Zoom as we did last year.
Send us your photos!!
August is typically a social meeting with Show and Tell of what we have done over the summer break. This year, the Show and Tell format is changing. Rather than have individuals discuss their projects as they are shown on the screen, we are asking that you fill out the Show & Tell Form. The slide show will be moderated by one person. This way, you don't have to be present to speak about your project. There will still be opportunities for comments and questions, either within the meeting or with followup emails. We are especially looking for examples of projects completed featuring skills learned in past workshops.
The Show & Tell form is now closed. Thanks in advance for your participation!
NOTE: If you have more than one project to share, please complete separate forms for each project.

Come a little early at 6:30 pm to collect your printed Yearbook if you requested one. Nadia Bevegni: Felt Seymour Center, Chapel Hill Born in Genoa Italy, Nadia Bevegni relocated to Cary, North Carolina in 2013. Her passion for building and improving new skills and her love for natural materials steered Nadia to explore the ancient process of felt making in 2010. She attributes the beginning of her craftsmanship to summer workshops on the Alps mainly with the traditional Italian felt-maker Romina Dogliani in Tuscany, and also with the Swiss felt-maker Ruth Bucci Baumer. Since working with her Master teachers in Europe, Nadia has mainly focused on using the techniques of wet felting and Nuno felting, making garments that are wearable art. During her Summers in Italy, she not only chooses her precious materials but keeps herself updated about fiber and textile innovations, fabric design, and style trends. Nadia finds continuous inspiration in the colors of the Italian landscapes, and in the beauty of luxury fibers and fabrics, always keeping a focus on a natural and sustainable environment. Her hand-felted work is shown a few times each year in local trunk-shows and events at Fearrington Village in Pittsboro, in Chapel Hill and in Apex. Custom-made work and teaching classes bring Nadia joy and pride in passing the ancient felting knowledge and craftsmanship to other people. Her presentation in the Auditorium will conclude with a demonstration by Nadia of wet felting practice. Visit her website at: https://itfelt.wordpress.com/about/ Results of your 2-Card Draw Weaving Challenge will be shared! |

Jan Friedman: Fiber Collage Seymour Center, Chapel Hill With over 25 years experience doing fiber collage, Jan Friedman will give an overview of how and why she got started and where she has gone from there. She uses a wide assortment of textile techniques; such as tapestry, dyed and woven bands, shibori, sun prints, and her most recent addition, embroidery. The textile elements are combined with natural treasures found on walks; which include such items as leaves, twigs, stones, shells, and feathers. These objects are stored until they are needed in a specific collage. In contrast to her highly planned tapestries, she work intuitively, bringing together and arranging those elements in order to make a piece whose soul and energy is greater than the sum of its parts. Collage work is playtime for Jan, with few rules and lots of creative possibilities. Jan Friedman’s web address is: http://janfriedmanfiber.com/index.html. |

TFAC Maker Celebration
Where: Triangle Fiber Arts Center in Durham
Our May guild meeting will be a celebration of our community of makers. It will be held at TFAC in the school’s auditorium.
Study Groups on Display. With the bigger room we have space for all the study groups to show what they have been working on. This is a great chance to see up close the kinds of things our members are making these days. Some study groups have openings for more members which means you might find a kindred group. Or you may be inspired to start a study group of your own. It is really useful to spend time with other weavers or spinners or felters or other fiber artists to share tips and study structure or techniques.
Weaver to Weaver Sale. We will also have an area for members who have handmade items for sale. We don’t get many opportunities to buy from our own members. And who better to appreciate their work than other fiber enthusiasts? If you would like to participate in the Weaver to Weaver Sale, please sign up online for table space:
Time to Socialize. The evening will also have socializing time accompanied by nibbles and drink. The later sunset gives us time to enjoy each other’s company and then head home before dark. Join us in a toast to Triangle Weavers and all that they make!

- You will be responsible for dealing with your own sales whether they be cash, check or credit
- You can either reserve a whole table (as space allows) or share a table if you will have just a few items
- All sales items must be handmade items that were created by you
- To reserve a sales table online, click here
Time to Socialize. The evening will also have socializing time accompanied by nibbles and drink. The later sunset gives us time to enjoy each other’s company and then head home before dark. Join us in a toast to Triangle Weavers and all that they make!

Connie Lippert – Fundamentals of Wedge Weave Where: Seymour Center in Chapel Hill Connie’s tapestries are woven in wedge weave using yarns hand-dyed with natural materials. Wedge weave is a tapestry weave originated by the Navajo around 1870 and practiced by them for two or three decades. In contrast to most weaving which is woven horizontally on the loom, wedge weave is woven on the diagonal which give it its characteristic scalloped edge. See Connie’s website at http://connielippertart.com/gallery.html or more information and inspiration |

We want to put up a piece from everyone to build a rich display showing the varied and diverse work of all our members. Anyone who submits an item will be eligible for one of our door prizes. - The May 25, 2017 Triangle Weavers guild meeting will be a progressive walk-around held at the Triangle Fiber Arts Center (TFAC). The later sunsets in May mean we can hold our May guild meeting at our space and still see the street signs on the way home! As our guild membership grows it is a little harder for us to know each other and to know each member’s interests and talents. By gathering at TFAC we can talk the night away and get to know each other better.
- We are meeting at the Triangle Fiber Arts Center to show all of you who have never been there what a great place we have and for everyone to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of TW. We want everyone to feel at home here. Various stations will be set up in our classrooms and the hallway for you to ask every burning question you have about the Triangle Weavers guild. Come learn things you never knew about the guild.
- Triangle Weavers started 45 years ago this spring. And we’ve come a long way. We will not have a business meeting, but instead spend some time learning about the guild’s structure and activities at the information stations. Then the guild and Board members are providing a buffet dinner and there will be cake! Come celebrate the Triangle Weavers Guild. We will have a free raffle for those who attend and time to share summer plans before the guild takes a summer break from monthly guild meetings.
- TFAC drop-ins, classes and workshops will continue throughout the summer.
Note: Our traditional Beast in the Bag Challenge will not be done at this meeting but will be postponed until sometime early in the summer or fall of 2017. Details will follow.

Preparing for Showing and Selling your Work
Have you been hiding your weaving skills under a basket? Have you been seeking a way to sell your items but are unsure whether they are marketplace quality? Have you hoped to be included in a juried show or competition? This hands-on meeting offers you the chance to learn a bit more about the criteria often used for acceptance in juried shows, gallery sales venues, or competitions.
First a panel of our members will present examples of criteria used for evaluating items for inclusion. They will show items which have been accepted in such events, as well as discuss some of the factors, other than quality, which might determine inclusion or not. Then we will break into small groups for gentle, guided discussions of items brought in for evaluation.

Jacques Dufour: The French Connection Jacques DuFour—owner of French Connections in Pittsboro, NC will share his experiences in weaving. He has managed a spinning and weaving operation in West Africa. He will share samples of the cloth and baskets from his personal collection as well a present a treasure trove of information about weaving and fabric dying in the small villages he visited. Finely structured, brightly patterned Kinte cloth, dramatic cloth made by mud-stain dying, amazing tufted mats woven from very fine strands of bark, and stunning colorful useful baskets are just a few of the varied weaving and fiber techniques created by these weavers . Their skills, creativity, and adaptations should evoke new insights and inspire our own work as we gain in our understanding of and connection to this ancient process we share with weavers throughout the world. Weaver's Challenge Due: This September meeting is also the month to share your completed CHALLENGE items the criteria for which were drawn from the four bags --COLOR, FIBER, WEAVE STRUCTURE, and FINISHING --at last December's meeting. If you are new to the Triangle Weavers, you will marvel at how the weavers adapt and create the most amazing items from those randomly selected directions and you can look forward to participating in the 2016 CHALLENGE. if you are long term member maybe you will be inspired to reach into those bags this coming year. It is a fun, purposeful way to stretch self-imposed boundaries , explore new processes, and maybe even find a new path in your craft by expanding what your Challenge challenged you to learn. |

Linda E. Hardison – A Passion for Coverlets Linda Hardison will present an overview of North American coverlets with particular emphasis on her research and documentation of old geometric coverlets. A weaving class the summer after high school graduation began her lifelong fiber art interest. It was only later that she found out that her great-grandmother had also been a weaver and spinner. During her youth, she had put aside her loom and wheel (which Linda has) to knit socks and small pieces of lace. Over the years she added spinning, knitting and dyeing to her weaving skills. Collectively they enable her to realize her creative ideas and pursue many fascinating fiber projects. Her particular interest is historical/traditional weaving with an emphasis on hand woven bed covering, often referred to as coverlets. From spring to fall, she weaves regularly at the Bryant House Historical Museum in Moore County. Linda has been a member of Triangle Weavers for six years. She is also a member of Handweavers Guild of America, Complex Weavers, and the Sandhillls Handweavers Guild. |

Textile Trails through Southeast Asia: How I Learned About Weaving Through the Eyes of a Traveler Presenter: Mary Ann Kluger Triangle Guild member Mary Anne is a relatively new weaver who has traveled to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Bali as well as China and Japan collecting textiles and stories all along the way. As she traveled she trekked and visited weaving villages and met weavers, documenting her visits with photos and textiles. She learned about how weavers in Myanmar are weaving with lotus stems and are still using the complex 100 shuttle weave or how Lao, Thai and Vietnamese women form formal and informal coops for economic sustainability for themselves and their families. Mary Anne will share photos, videos and textiles in a colorful and informative program. Mary Anne Kluger is a member of the Triangle Weavers Guild. Her focus is on experimenting with and using as much color in handwoven scarves as she possibility can! She began her career as a reporter for a small newspaper. After discovering that journalists work long, hard hours for no pay she moved into advertising in the media department for McKinney & Silver and then as media director for Howard & Taylor. She also served as the in-house ad manager for two other Triangle area companies. She now works with her husband (as little as possible), gardens, weaves and travels as much as possible. |
