Mixing Colors and Fibers with Deflected Doubleweave
ONLINE Workshop with Natalie Drummond 2 sessions: August or September 2021 When: 13 Hours of Online Lecture August Session:
September Session:
Instructor: Natalie Drummond Where: Online! Cost: $130 members, $170 non-members Registration deadline: July 21, 2021 (August Session) August 12, 2021 (September Session) Maximum class size: 10 students Like traditional double weave, this weave structure is woven in two layers. However, there are sections where the two layers are combined, or interlaced. In the sections with separate layers, there are both warp and weft floats, allowing the threads to slide and bend (i.e., deflect), when the fabric is off the loom and wet-finished. The deflections can produce waves and circles, leading to endless design possibilities! |
In this Deflected Double Weave workshop, you will weave samples to explore the use of different fibers and setts, including selvedge and finishing techniques used in deflected double Weave. Afterwards you will be able to use what you have learned to weave a scarf, if you choose, with the remainder of your warp.
On day 1, Weave deflected double weave samples on your pre-warped 8-shaft loom using various fibers and setts. Explore selvedge methods “where the shuttle meets the shed” for beautiful finishing. Discuss various finishing methods with and without agitation. Cut samples off loom and hand wash samples prior to Day 2
On Day 2, we will discuss and compare hand washed samples-movement/deflection v. differential shrinkage. Explore a simple treadle OR tie-up change to weave your own scarf with the remainder of your warp(or sample).
Drafts with Material List provided via e-mail (2 drafts)
Pre-Workshop Zoom Question and Answer - one month prior, but after receiving drafts

Color and Design in Huck Lace Towels
ONLINE workshop with Rosalie Neilson When: 3 days, 2 sessions/day
Instructor: Rosalie Nielson Where: Online! Cost: $175 members, $215 non-members, includes the $25 materials fee for a coil-bound notebook with drafts and exercises, in addition to envelopes containing Design Pages, Transparent Overlays, and Huck Lace Template. Registration deadline: May 3, 2021 Maximum class size: 20 students The structure of Huck Lace provides a treasure trove of pattern for weavers. It is a shaft-efficient weave structure where an 8-shaft loom produces 6-block patterns; and a 4-shaft loom produces sixteen different ways to combine textures of warp & weft floats with plain weave. Weavers will learn how “blocks” or units of huck lace are threaded on four and eight shafts, and how they can be combined to expand design possibilities. Discussions will focus on converting a profile draft into a threading and treadling draft, and how literally thousands of designs are created with a single threading draft by changing the tie-up. |
The Towel Project uses 4 colors in the warp to create 3 different different sections of huck lace, separated by plain weave. Three options for towel width will be given with on-loom widths of 15 1/3", 16 1/4" or 22" depending on the size of your loom.
Drafts will be provided for both 4-harness and 8-harness looms. A six-yard warp yields five towels. To see examples of what weavers have done in the past: click here
To view a pdf for what will be covered in each Zoom session, click here.
Prerequisites for participants: Have some familiarity with the Huck Lace technique or another Lace structure and be comfortable warping your loom.

A Virtual Workshop April 10-11, 2021, 10 am - 4 pm Instructor: Deb Essen Where: Online! Cost: $125 members, $150 non-members Explore Color in Weaving! You have picked out some wonderful colors of yarn, they look fabulous on the cones next to each other, but then you start weaving and…oh, dear! What happened? This class explores “what happened”: how to successfully pick yarn and colors that will play well together with an introduction to color theory, how color value works in weaving and more. This class is open to rigid heddle, table loom and multi-shaft floor loom weavers. Students will provide their own materials. You will pick an inspiration image or object and are encouraged to use yarn from your stash. Yarn and fiber size is up to the student. More detailed warping instructions will be emailed about a month before the workshop. Handouts will be emailed a few days before the workshop. Day 1 – The day starts with everyone introducing themselves and showing the color inspiration and yarns selected. Then we move to lecture on Color Theory, Using a color wheel, the interactions of colors together, and a big section on Color Value and how it affects our weaving. This usually takes us to mid-afternoon. The day ends with everyone starting to weave on their samples. |
Day 2 – The morning starts with questions/review of the previous day and then moves into talking about Proportion in design and color use. This usually takes us to lunch and then we break to finish weaving samples. We meet up mid-afternoon and everyone participates in Show and Tell of their samples with observations/analysis based on what we’ve learned.

One Warp, Many Structures
ONLINE Workshops with Denise Kovnat When: 8 Hours of Online Lecture
Instructor: Denise Kovnat Where: Online! Cost: $100 members, $140 non-members Registration deadline: August 21, 2020 Maximum class size: 12 students for each workshop As Marian Stubenitsky has shown in Weaving With Echo and Iris, extended parallel threadings offer endless possibilities for weaving a variety of structures and designs. You'll begin this workshop with your loom dressed in a two-color warp threaded on opposites. (Drafts will be provided about 6 weeks beforehand.) Working with a variety of tie-ups and treadlings, you will weave a series of designs in Echo, Jin (turned taquete) and Shadow Weave. After cutting off and resleying your warp, you will weave Rep and Double Weave. The takeaway is a sampler of colorful patterns and a broader, deeper understanding of the potential for extended parallel threadings and how to design them |
Pre-requisites for Participants: Advanced Beginners and beyond. Must be able to dress your loom and read a draft.
You will need to download the Zoom app on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or smart phone before the workshop. A few days before, Denise will have a dress rehearsal of Zoom to make sure everyone is familiar with how it works.
You will need a warped loom (4 to 12 shafts) with at least 4 yards of warp, 400 ends, in two colors of 10/2 cotton. Other 10/2 cellulose fibers such as rayon, bamboo, or soy can also be used.
For wefts, you will need 20/2 cotton in at least 2 or 3 different colors and some 3/2 cotton or light-worsted weight yarn. Denise asks students to choose weft colors that are bold and maybe outside your comfort zone. Think orange, pink, olive green, brass, khaki, turquoise, purple, and fuchsia. The 20/2 cotton is available from Lone Star Loom Room under the name of “Venne” cotton. You will get a handout on choosing warp colors for a 2-colored warp.

Spin to Weave, Add the Fancy, Delete the Fear:
A Workshop with Patsy Zawistoski Tuesday & Wednesday, October 29-30, 2019, 9:00am – 4:00pm Instructor: Patsy Zawistoski Where: Triangle Fiber Arts Center (TFAC) 3717 Murphy School Rd., Durham, NC 27705 Cost: $225 member, $265 non-member, plus a $40 materials fee covers all fibers (wool and mohair) for class work and extra yarns to take home; plus weaving and spinning worksheets and booklets. Registration Deadline: October 1, 2019 Class size: 16 student limit Ready to spin and then weave with your own unique yarns? Don’t be intimidated about spinning warp any longer. Learn to spin different types of smooth and fancy textured warp yarns and I’ll help you understand why these yarns meet the requirements for warp. We’ll also spin fluffy weft yarns. Warping requires some calculations - I'll cover these and how to adapt them to your own situation. Next, we’ll do some wrappings and small weaving to sample warp ideas. Students will choose a colorway: purple/blue, blue/green, green/yellow, yellow/orange, orange/red, or red/purple. Fibers and rovings in the student’s chosen color way will be provided. |
Prerequisites: Intermediate spinners, who spin, ply and weave, but are ready to branch out into other styles of yarns.
Participants should bring:
Participants should bring:
- A good working wheel
- hand cards and/or hand combs
- lazy kate and 3 bobbins for yarn construction
- hole punch, small cards and baggies for labeling fibers and yarns
- hand towel for wet finishing yarn
- usual tools, oil, etc for their wheel
- Optional – you may spin some smooth warp prior to workshop for Patsy to look at.
- If you want to coordinate the class yarns with some from your handspun stash, bring about 100 yards of smooth 2 or 3-plied handspun in your chosen colorway. This could be part of your warp. In class, we’ll spin the complementary wool and mohair as fancy textured warp and weft yarns.
Color Blending and Texture: A Workshop with Jan Friedman
Friday- Sunday, Sept 27-29, 2019, 9:00am – 4:00pm Instructor: Jan Friedman Where: Triangle Fiber Arts Center (TFAC) 3717 Murphy School Rd., Durham, NC 27705 Cost: $275 member, $315 non-member, plus a $40 materials fee covers 1 bag of yarn gradations, silk and fabric strips as well as a small bag of accent yarn Registration Deadline: September 6, 2019 Class size: 16 student limit This workshop will teach you how to weave slow color gradations using color groupings. This approach is effective not only in tapestries but also in rugs, table linens, and garments. It is possible to achieve wonderfully rich colors by combining numerous thin yarns of varying shades. By choosing different fibers such as rayon, wool, cotton, silk, and metallic yarn, you also can add subtle textural interest to your work. Further textural effects will be explored by working with dyed silk, and cotton fabric strips. Check out Jan's website: www.janfriedmanfiber.com Prerequisites: Some weaving experience; ability to warp a loom independently Participants should bring:
Note: There are a limited number of looms available for students to use on a first come first serve basis. Misc weaving tools are also available. |
Double Weave Overshot
September 5, 6, and 7 (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM each day Instructor: Jackie Heller Where: Triangle Fiber Arts Center (TFAC) 3717 Murphy School Rd., Durham, NC 27705 Cost for each class: $180 for members, $220 for non-members plus $5 materials fee handouts Level: Intermediate and above Maximum class size: 6 Registration Deadline: August 15, 2019 |
Any draft that is threaded in an odd-even order can be used to create a double weave overshot structure. The resulting fabric looks like the original design but it is an integrated two-layered plain weave structure which avoids the problem of long floats, making it a very stable cloth.
Participants will choose one of four patterns provided by the instructor. Looms will be warped back-to-front. The instructor will provide instructions in advance for winding a 2 ½ - 3 yard warp that will need to be wound onto the back beam prior to the first class and ready for threading during class.
Time permitting, the instructor will demonstrate converting a four-shaft overshot drawdown to a double weave pattern using FiberWorks PCW.
Prerequisites: Intermediate or higher weaving experience. Students should be very comfortable threading a lot of heddles and warping their looms independently.
Participants should provide your own 5/2 cotton for warp and weft in two colors: one dark and the other light/contrasting. You will need approximately ¾ lb. of each color. You may also choose to bring a third color to change the appearance of the underside of the fabric. This is a two-shuttle weave; bring your own shuttles if you like. Plan to bring your lunch each day and a snack if you like. Hot drinks will be available at TFAC.
NOTE: Any 4 harness loom can be used for this workshop. However an 8-treadle loom will make the treadling for this project simpler. The guild has looms available for participants to use if needed (and some of those looms are 8-treadle looms). The guild looms must remain on the premises at TFAC so you will need to plan to beam your warp at TFAC if using a guild loom. TFAC will be open on occasion during the week before the class to provide access to the looms.
Please indicate if you need to use a guild loom on your registration form.

Sakiori! Silk and Batik as Wearable or Functional Art
Saturday, July 27, 2019, 10:00 am-4:00 pm Instructor: Dawn Hummer Where: Triangle Fiber Arts Center (TFAC) 3717 Murphy School Rd., Durham, NC 27705 Cost: $60 for members, $80 for non-members plus a small materials fee paid to instructor for any purchased materials Maximum class size: 10 Registration Deadline: July 13, 2019 |
Enjoy Sakiori weaving and choose your own project: a wearable mobius/scarf or a wall/table piece. This “no rules” style of weaving allows for designing in the reed, meaning you will create without a plan and design as you go – freestyle! Focus on color, texture, spontaneity and experimentation, resulting in a completely unique piece of wearable art or home décor! Techniques will include looping, alternative selvages, double and triple interlocking weft, floats, inlay, knots, inserts, slits and windows, Sakiori techniques, finger fringing and characteristics of specific yarns.
Sakiori utilizes cut or torn fabric strips of silk, cotton, batik, etc. for the weft. Strips of recycled and repurposed fabrics are perfect for this purpose. Bring your own stash of recycled silk or batik fabrics, torn into strips, or purchase from the instructor for a small materials fee. A sharing basket of “treasures” will be available if you would like to contribute bits and pieces of special yarns for pops of color along the way.
This is your project so sett and fiber are totally up to you. The class will focus on weft techniques. Black or navy in any fiber are suggested for the warp to allow for maximum designing with weft. While no specific sett is required, 8-20 epi work well depending on your fiber. Also, while no specific warp width or length are required, 7-20” in width are recommended.
Looms must be warped in advance of the class. You can use your own loom, rent one of 4 pre-warped Saori looms from the instructor for $25, or use one of a limited number of guild looms available on a first-come, first-served basis. Guild looms will need to be warped at TFAC prior to class and remain on the premises at TFAC. TFAC will be open on occasion during the week before the class to provide time for warping. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to rent a Saori loom from the instructor or use a guild loom.
Prerequisites: Ability to warp a loom independently unless renting a pre-warped loom from the instructor.
Participants should bring a tapestry needle and your warped loom with plenty of weft fabric strips and yarns for your project. Bring your lunch and a snack if you like; hot drinks will be available.

This class is perfect for the student with little or no prior weaving experience. We will be weaving a set of small cotton mats that can be used as mug mats or saved as samples in a notebook for future reference. You will learn to plan your project, decipher a threading draft, measure and wind a warp, dress the loom from back to front, and weave a set of from 4 to 6 mats - each with a different treadling pattern of your choosing.
For the student who completes the first project quickly and is able to spend some independent time weaving during the TFAC drop in hours on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons, there may be an opportunity to put on a second warp with a different threading for a wall hanging sampler or more mats. This would be a great way to reinforce what you learned during the first half of the class.
Participants should bring: pencil and paper and their favorite shuttle if they have one (not required). Please bring a lunch for the first meeting date (Saturday, February 2nd).

Focus on color, texture, spontaneity and experimentation, resulting in a completely unique scarf. Techniques will include: looping, alternative selvedges, interlocking weft, floats, inlay, knots, inserts, characteristics of specific yarns, and windows.
Pre-requisites for the class: Ability to warp a loom independently, unless renting a pre-warped loom from the instructor.
Student should bring: Please bring scissors, tapestry needle, and your warped loom* with plenty of weft yarn for your project. This is your project, so sett and fiber are totally up to you. We will focus on weft techniques. Warp suggestion: holiday colors such as red, black, green or gold. No specific sett is required, but 8-15 epi works well, depending on your warp fiber (any fiber typed is fine) No specific warp width or length, 7-10 inches is just a recommendation.
A sharing basket will be provided for bits and pieces of “treasures” if you would like to contribute some interesting bits of special yarns for pops of color along the way
*Limited number of unwarped looms available from TW at no charge. Pre-warped Saori and Cricket looms available for rent from instructor ($15 Cricket, $25 Saori). Please reserve.

FALL WORKSHOP with Karen Donde
Turned Beiderwand: One Threading, Multiple Structures October 26 – 28, 2018 (Friday - Sunday), 9 am - 4 pm each day Instructor: Karen Donde Where: Triangle Fiber Arts Center (TFAC) 3717 Murphy School Rd., Durham, NC 27705 Cost: $250 for members, $290 for non-members plus $10 materials fee for a detailed handout Maximum class size: 15 Registration deadline: October 12, 2018 |
Beiderwand is a compound weave with origin in 1800s in northern Germany/Denmark. A kind of double weave, it is woven with two alternating wefts, one slightly thicker than the other. The “main” warp forms pattern areas, and the “secondary” warp forms the ground (background) and ties pattern wefts in a plain weave pattern. Turning a beiderwand draft creates clean pattern blocks, better drape and faster, one-shuttle weaving than its traditional supplementary weft method. The resulting threading also adapts easily to weave other structures. You will warp with a supplementary warp and weave samples, learning how to turn a draft and make do without a second warp beam.
Prerequisites: Participants should be proficient with weaving basic structures.
Materials to be provided by participants: Pre-warped 6 or 8 shaft-loom (8 shafts preferred), yarn and other common weaving tools specified by instructor (sent to participants after registration). Yarns will be different weights of Tencel and cotton. Note: A limited number of 8-harness table and floor looms will be available on loan by the guild.
Karen Donde is a nationally known instructor. Visit her website at http://karendondehandwovens.com/section/357042.html

TWO Great Tom Knisely Workshops
You’ll experience the thrill of seeing how two or three contrasting colors, when carefully arranged in the warp and then woven in the weft direction, can create magnificent looking fabric on the simplest of threadings. On a 15” width warp, you will thread 5 different patterns in a sampler format, then during the workshop you will weave several different patterns in both plain weave and twill. You will be amazed at how simple contrasting color arrangements can affect a rather simple fabric. [Note – this will not be a color theory workshop.
Participants must be able to warp their own loom and must provide a loom warped to specifications provided to registrants. The guild has limited number of looms which will be assigned on a first-come basis. Most participants will need to supply their own loom.

Weft-Faced Twill (also called Boundweave and Saddle Blanket weave) uses widely sett warps to allow weft fiber to slide down and cover the warp, creating a firm and thick textile perfect for wall hangings, table linens, and rugs. You will learn different ways to treadle this weave, starting with two colors, then four; then you will move on to design your own patterns. Using the same warp, you will have options to explore design both of the Southwest and Scandinavia.

Focus on the Warp: Controlling Creative Chaos,
A Workshop with Kathrin Weber February 23 – 25, 2018 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) 9 am - 4:30 pm each day Instructor: Kathrin Weber Where: Triangle Fiber Arts Center (TFAC) 3717 Murphy School Rd., Durham, NC 27705 Cost: $300 for members, $340 for non-members plus $72 materials fee for dyed warp and other materials and handouts provided by the instructor Level: Must be able to warp a loom and weave independently Equipment: 4 or 8-shaft loom (some available on loan by guild) Maximum class size: 10 |
This workshop teaches techniques that allow the weaver to be more playful and spontaneous in planning and weaving fabric while producing good, functional cloth. Beginning with multiple warps, hand-painted by Kathrin, participants will learn to flip and shift warp sections, and to work with warp chains of different weight, texture or fiber within a single project. Knowing how to do this with visual and technical proficiency not only adds the potential for added complexity in the finished woven piece, but it also allows you to use the materials you have in your yarn closet more fearlessly in future woven projects.
Participants will work with color and weave effect in several plain weave configurations, then weave twills, repp and turned taquete on the same warp. No two warps or designs will be alike, so class members learn from one another. Weavers with more experience will be able to take their designs to more complex levels.
After signing up, each participant will receive a complete instruction sheet for preparing the “dummy” warp, to which the new, colorful warps will be tied during the workshop. Kathrin’s warps, from which you will choose, are hand-dyed cotton in a wide variety of colorways, hues and tones.. Participants will provide their own weft yarn (typically medium weight cotton in medium or black colors. Loom can be 4- or 8-shaft with straight draw threading. Please note: Floor looms are recommended. Table looms can be used if they are substantial looms that can accommodate a 5+ yard warp with a densely sett warp

Please bring a lunch for the first meeting date (Saturday, January 6th).

Over and Under Part 3 - Sampling for Success
Saturday & Sunday, October 14-15, 2017, 9 - 5 pm Instructor: Leslie Fesperman Where: Triangle Fiber Arts Center (TFAC) 3717 Murphy School Rd., Durham, NC 27705 Cost: $160 for members, $200 for non-members Maximum class size: 8 Registration deadline: September 30, 2017 |
By defining and thinking about what we are looking for in our project, we begin to consider just what it is that will please us when we take the piece off the loom and finish it. As a weaver begins to explore weave structures and materials, a valuable tool is learning to sample and keep records for future weavings and reference. In this two-day workshop, participants will come with looms warped and a section woven in the fiber and structure of their choice. We will discuss what individuals are looking for in their projects, taking and keeping accurate records, and each participant will weave several samples. We will finish samples, and at the end of the second day, we will discuss and share our findings.
Students will provide the following: Pre-warped 4-shaft loom with 8, 10, or 12-dent reed, shuttles and bobbins; notebook/sketchbook; pencils, pen, highlighter; scissors, and reed hook. An open mind to learning new ideas and doing things differently; ear plugs if needed to weave without noise distractions. Note: If you are unable to bring your own loom but wish to enroll in the class, please indicate that on the registration form, and we will contact you about providing a loom for the class.
Students need to come with their loom warped and have woven a square sample (left on loom). Pre-class instructions to be sent from instructor upon registration.

Intro to Ikat Warps (with Indigo)
Saturday, July 15, 2017, 10-3 pm (bring a lunch) Instructor: Kate Harris Where: Triangle Fiber Arts Center (TFAC) 3717 Murphy School Rd., Durham, NC 27705 Cost: $50 member, $70 non-member, plus a $7 materials fee Registration Deadline: June 24, 2017 Class size: 6 student limit In this class, participants will have the opportunity to design and create an ikat resisted warp that is dyed in indigo. Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique that is used to pattern yarn prior to weaving. The yarns are wound on warping pegs in multiple bundles and resisted with a waterproof material in a predetermined pattern. The bundles are dyed and the resist is removed, revealing the negative, or un-dyed areas. Participants will use cotton yarn to create a 9” x 12” wall-hanging. The design of the resists will be planned by the participant using graph paper. Planning, measuring and dying the warps will occur in class, and then the participants will take the warps home to weave the warps on their own looms. Participants can use any type of loom that is at least 9 inches wide- including rigid heddle and weave with any weft and weave structure once they get home. Participants will need to know the basics of warping and dressing a loom and be confident with weaving at home without supervision. They will also need to bring a cone of yarn (details to be sent after you sign up for class), scissors, and gloves/apron for dying (and wear old clothes). |
SUMMER WORKSHOP:
Discovering Deflected Doubleweave with Elisabeth Hill Friday to Sunday, June 16, 17 & 18, 2017 9 am - 4:30 pm each day Instructor: Elisabeth Hill Where: Triangle Fiber Arts Center (TFAC) 3717 Murphy School Rd., Durham, NC 27705 Cost: $250 for members, $290 for non-members plus a $50 materials fee for the warp & weft for sampler and scarf Level: Advanced Beginner to Intermediate Equipment: 8 harness loom required Maximum class size: 15 |
Stretch your creativity with this workshop by master weaver Elisabeth Hill. Deflected doubleweave is a weave structure that allows the warp and weft to shift and move, creating surprising curves and textures when the piece is off loom and wet-finished. It’s like defying the grid! After an explanation of the structure, students will experiment with lots of variations on a single threading, producing a sampler. Then students will choose a tie-up/treadling/colorway to weave a scarf.
Prior to the workshop, participants will need to warp an 8-shaft loom with an individual warp (provided by instructor). Participants will work on their own looms. This is not a round robin workshop.
Elisabeth says "I am a hand-weaver, teacher and mother of three children, two dogs, and three ( . . . there may be a few more) looms. I have been weaving since 1995, and I have received my Master Weaver certification from Hill Institute in Florence, MA. I am a technical editor for and frequent contributor to Handwoven Magazine." Check out her website at www.plainweave.net.
This workshop requires an 8 harness loom. A very limited number of 8 harness floor looms (see note below) and table looms are available on a first come, first served basis for guild members to borrow for use in the workshop. The looms will have to be warped at TFAC prior to class and remain on premises at TFAC. If you need to borrow a loom, please indicate that on your registration form.

Introduction to Woven Shibori
3 Sundays, May 7, May 21, and June 11, 2017, 1:00 to 4:30 pm Instructor: Mary Kircher Where: Triangle Fiber Arts Center (TFAC) 3717 Murphy School Rd., Durham, NC 27705 Cost: $90 for members, $130 for non members plus a $15 materials fee to be paid to the instructor Class Size: Limit 12 Registration deadline: April 10 |
Woven Shibori is a variation on traditional shibori dyeing in that it is dependent on the weaving process to create dyed patterns in hand-woven cloth. In this class, we will explore a two-step dye process resulting in virtually unlimited color and pattern interactions. The objective is to create as many samples as possible. Participants will weave samples, prepare them for dyeing, and go through both a first dye and overdyeing process with their samples. Participants will be provided drafts to create samples at home in addition there will be a few pre-warped looms at TFAC. At the conclusion, participants will have the skills to create a woven shibori project on their own.
Participant Requirements: Participants should be able to warp and weave on a 4-8 harness loom. They will need to weave samples between Class 1 and 2 either at home or at TFAC. If they weave at TFAC, they will need to be prepared to cut off their samples and scour the samples in preparation for dyeing and for retying the TFAC loom used.

Natural dyes from plants, bugs or minerals give rich colors that ancient peoples applied to hand woven fabric for centuries. We will explore reds from cochineal, browns from cutch and madder, yellows from turmeric and fustic. Fabrics and yarns from both plant and animal sources will be sampled for take home. The class will give an overview of each dye, recipes for fixatives & additives plus dye preparation. Participants will be able to dye two warps for scarves, napkins or placemats, keeping in mind that animal fiber dyes best with naturals. (Details about warps will be forwarded after registration.)
Participants will also receive 2 scarves (1 silk, 1 rayon) for dyeing/overdyeing using clamps and folding techniques to compare plant and animal results. Sources for dyes, fixatives and equipment will be included. A complete list of natural dyes, with colors and fixatives along with a bibliography will be part of class handouts.
Materials the participant should bring: full front apron and rubber gloves. Wear old clothes and shoes that can be “dyed” from accidents.

At this meeting each weaver will have a chance to choose and plan a project (a scarf, a towel, a pair of placemats, a set of mug mats) from a variety of resources. This will allow plenty of time before the first working meeting in November for ordering the yarns necessary for the project.
The real fun will begin in November. We meet every Saturday between November 7 and December 12 (except for Thanksgiving weekend) from 9 am to 1 pm. You will measure your warp, thread the loom (using back to front or front to back method), weave off your projects, and learn appropriate finishing techniques.
The guild’s floor looms will be used and miscellaneous weaving tools will be provided. The student will be responsible for providing the yarns for their project.
If you have questions about the class, contact Pattie at 919-469-2584 or [email protected].

We are excited to announce a daytime tapestry class with Anita Wolfenden to be held at our Triangle Fiber Arts Center at Murphy School. The class will be three Wednesdays, starting mid to late April, going into May, spaced several weeks apart to allow plenty of time to weave and to accommodate Anita’s schedule. In between classes Anita will be available via e-mail to answer questions.
Though this is a beginner’s tapestry class, it is for members that are comfortable weaving and comfortable with weaving terminology, so the time can be spent specifically in tapestry techniques. In other words for advanced beginners and beyond. Maximum number of students is eight.
Material & Equipment; Students can use portable frame looms that Anita has donated, or their own portable looms. Students may want to work on a frame loom in class and then work on a floor loom on a bigger piece at home. Anita has also donated a large selection of materials which will be available for use during the class.
Class size is limited to 8 students. Since we anticipate a lot of interest, if there are more than eight, we will have a lottery.
